Horse Hair Shaving Brush

Horse hair shaving brushes are making a come back after almost 100 years following the anthrax scare of the beginning of last century.  They are still difficult to find as compared to other types of shaving brushes but horse hair shaving brushes feel really nice to the face once you get past the smell. It will take a few washes with shampoo to get rid of the funk. Not that new badger knotted brushes smell any better but the brand of funk from horse is unique.

Another cool thing is that horse hair shaving brushes are cut from the horse’s mane or tail, the horse lives to fight another day.  Badger and boar are not so lucky, they get killed in someway, shape, or form for their hair.

As far as performance I think horse hair shaving brushes  perform at par with badger and better than boar, they hold more water than both. Silvertip badger knots do hold more water though.

This particular Vie-Long Professional Black is made with 25% mane hair and 75% tail hair in a 20mm knot. It is sort of floppy but you quickly get used to it. Highly recommended.
